Today we feature our 5 favourite campgrounds (click on each link below) where you can also pack your fishing rod and fish for trout or saltwater species. Tasmania is a world-renowned fishing destination, offering a vast array of freshwater and saltwater fishing options suitable for anglers of all skill levels. From the plentiful and varies lakes of the Central Highlands teeming with trout to the deep offshore waters where tuna are plentiful, there’s something for everyone in Tassie.
Freshwater Fishing
Tasmania is home to some of the best wild brown trout fishing in the world. The Central Highlands boast over 3,000 lakes and tarns, many of which hold wild trout known for their size and fighting spirit. Popular spots include Arthurs Lake, Penstock Lagoon, and Woods Lake to name but a few. The trout season typically runs from August to May, but some spots are open year-round. Please note licenses are required to fish for trout for persons aged 14 years and above.
Salmon
Atlantic salmon are also found in some Tasmanian rivers, offering exciting fly-fishing opportunities. The Derwent River near Hobart is a popular spot.
Game Fishing
Tasmania’s proximity to the continental shelf means you can be fishing for big game fish like yellowfin tuna, striped marlin, albacore, striped tuna, and mako shark just minutes from shore. St Helens is considered the state’s game-fishing capital – if you are camping Bay of Fires, you can always enquire about a fishing charter.
Bottom Fishing
Flathead, gurnard, kingfish, snapper, and bream are just some of the bottom fish you can catch around Tasmania’s coastline.
Beach Fishing
Beaches around the state offer good opportunities for whiting, salmon, and trevally.
